Earth Night Seen From Space

Before Earth Day approaches let us celebrate Earth Night with a video of time-lapse imagery from the International Space Station. A big thank you to Roger Weiss, technical integration specialist for the ISS, for alerting us to today’s great show from ReelNASA.

PHOTOS: Earth Perspectives Through the Ages

The sequences in the video are stitched together from photographs taken by the Expedition 30 crew aboard ISS and show the following (a tag appears as well on the lower left of the screen during the video):

:01 — Stars over southern United States

:08 — US west coast to Canada

:21 — Central Europe to the Middle East

:36 — Aurora Australis over the Indian Ocean

:54 — Storms over Africa

1:08 — Central United States

1:20 — Midwest United States

1:33 — United Kingdom to Baltic Sea

1:46 — Moonset

1:55 — Northern United States to Eastern Canada

2:12 — Aurora Australis over the Indian Ocean

2:32 — Comet Lovejoy

2:53 — Aurora Borealis over Hudson Bay

3:06 — United Kingdom to Central Europe

The song “Walking in the Air,” by Howard Blake, is especially chosen for its lyrics:

Me 5 minutes ago.

Me: What is this "ALT + reblog button" nonsense?
Me: Oh. My. God. This is amazing.

Ok, this post encompass the whole month technically of what I did not mention.  And I remembered only because I was browsing through these photos.

FOOD EXCURSION TIME!!!  Yay.

Anyway, food is a major thing in all essence of life.  But that doesn’t mean it has to be healthy.  In a brief description of the first two photos, it was preeetttyyy heavy.  The first photo is actually a popular dish in Korea called samgyeopsal.  It is what you expect from a korean bbq, but it is centralized towards a specific region of the pig.  It’s pretty much the bacon/belly area of the pig but the good thing about it is that there are a lot of veggies to eat it with.  But still heavy.  Like guilty eating heavy.

After an exploration with a friend of mine in a place near my campus, we encountered this delicacy.  Basically we found it in one of the biggest cover plaza’s in Seoul that specializes in textiles and street food.  This oily goodness is a garlic pancake.  And well…it was just really garlicky.  And that’s all I can really say about it.

Anywho, in this past Saturday, my buddies and I went to Insadong off of Line 4 off the subway at the Anyong exit.  Insadong is quite a popular attraction for tourist because of the palaces surrounding the area that shows the quite distinct class of modernity and tradition.  There were several buddhist temples (that I regretfully not visited), and it’s pretty big on teas.

This ice cream cone was worth every penny because it was a matcha, soft served, green tea ice cream.  And it was awesome.  It made life worth living again to be honest.  I purchased it at a shopping plaza that was unique in a sense that when you go upstairs, you go on this slanted floor that was like a puzzle.  With graffiti lining the wall…

But I as I said, Insadong is big on tea and my friends and I decided to hit up a tea cafe place.  My friend purchased the jujube tea and we had several treats with it.  I resisted on purchasing items because of the price, and I wasn’t willing to pay 8 bucks for a cup of fancy tea.  But I just mooched off of my friends and hope they won’t hold it against me.

And this really concludes my month.  To be honest, I’m really short with words and I don’t like to glorify things, unless it’s for a paper that requires filler words to meet the required word count.  And oh, this is my work station right here.  Very unorganized and unmotivational to work with.

Cheers folks, for I have lasted another day in Korea.

So, a quick update again because some people are complaining about a lack of (food) photos.  Therefore, here is one.
This is a photo of a cake form Paris Baguette, which is a huge chain in Korea that specializes in bread and cakes.
The story behind this cake was in retaliation of “White Day (March 14)” in Korea which is after Valentines day.  Basically for V-day, the girls give the guys chocolate while for White Day, the girls receive something back from the guys.  Being forever alone and single that my friends and I are, we decided to retaliate to such customs and do it our way, aka the American way since really us Americans ate a whole cake ourselves.  Which by the way, only consist of the four of us while another group of four had another cake.
Yeaaaah….

Whoa

Quick update:

Apparently, President Obama will be in Korea in a week or so for the Nuclear Summit.  And most interestingly enough, this summit will also tie in North Korea.  The Summit will consist of other world leaders to discuss about well…nuclear use, development and weaponry.  Even though North Korea will not be participating in the Summit, it will be held here, in South Korea, right below North Korea.  Yeaaaahhhh, I think I will stay indoors during those days.

What I got from wiki:

A non-binding communiqué issued after the summit recognized nuclear terrorism as “one of the most challenging threats to international security” and saw parties:[11]

  1. Reaffirm the fundamental responsibility of States, consistent with their respective international obligations
  2. Call on States to work cooperatively as an international community to advance nuclear security
  3. Recognize that highly enriched uranium and separated plutonium require special precautions
  4. Endeavor to fully implement all existing nuclear security commitments and work toward acceding to those not yet joined
  5. Support the objectives of international nuclear security instruments
  6. Reaffirm the essential role of the International Atomic Energy Agency in the international nuclear security framework
  7. Recognize the role and contributions of the United Nations
  8. Acknowledge the need for capacity building for nuclear security and cooperation at bilateral, regional and multilateral levels
  9. Recognize the need for cooperation among States to effectively prevent and respond to incidents of illicit nuclear trafficking
  10. Recognize the continuing role of nuclear industry in nuclear security
  11. Support the implementation of strong nuclear security practices
  12. Recognize that measures contributing to nuclear material security have value in relation to the security of radioactive substances
What caught my eye was Israel and Saudi Arabia participating in the Summit, and it may be because of Iran with their nuclear development.

Once again…

Sorry for the lack of pictures.  I’m really not all into random photos unless I really want to capture something worth while, but alas, nothing.

Oook

So, I think I will add photos later since it’s kinda late and feeling rather lethargic from this week.  The last post I made was on March 2, but a lot of things had occurred and much of it I am unable to recall.  And no, it wasn’t because I was going “WOOOO” and party hardy, but just a lot of things happened.

What stood out the most from my last post was my cell group gathering and the K-Collection Fashion Show and Concert.

Starting with my cell group event.  Ok, not gonna lie, but I kinda thought our mentor in our cell activities are kinda scattered with no real event happening.  With some pushing and whining from the other members about how all the other groups were doing some activity, we finally were able to organize ourselves to participate in some activities.  And ultimately, we saw Nanta, which is pretty much Iron Chef meets Stomp.

Most of the show was percussion instruments and gag jokes.  Such as a broom up the butt, mock battles, and just gibber gabber with it came to the dialogue.  We came to the conclusion that it was mostly for entertainment and real no musical flair.  Oh, and to note, before Nanta, the group ate at Shabu Shabu which was pretty nice since the last time I recalled Shabu Shabu, it sucked.  The activities after Nanta isn’t really worth while since it was just going to a bar/club setting just to get to know other people and for the alcohol.

However, the most memorable activity was the free K-pop and fashion show at the Olympic Stadium.  And it was free…for foreigners.  Not gonna lie, when I saw my favorite band *cough*snsd*cough*, I let loose a few screams, squeals and grunts just to recollect myself and not seem like a blabbering fool meeting their hero.

Other than that, classes are dry and boring, KLI (the language courses) were slow at the beginning, but starting to pick up its pace.
